Huawei P20 Pro Connect to Garmin Forerunner – Bluetooth

If you have a Garmin Smartwatch or Fitness Tracker, such as the Forerunner or Fenix series, you want to connect the device securely to the Huawei P20 Pro via Bluetooth. Here, however, it is possible that the smartphone no longer connects to the Garmin watch despite a unique pairing.

Neither resetting the Bluetooth settings nor recoupling the devices brings lasting success. We had the same problem with our Garmin Forerunner 235, but fortunately we were able to fix it very easily by changing the following settings on our Huawei P20 Pro:

  1. Open Settings
  2. On the Huawei P20 Pro, navigate to "Apps & Privileges"
  3. Select Apps and then select them at the bottom of the dialog box: Settings
  4. Search for Garmin Connect App
  5. Allow the app to ignore battery optimizations
  6. Restart the Huawei P20 Pro.

Then connect the Garmin watch to your Huawei P20 Pro via Bluetooth. This should now work without problems.

We hope this tip has also helped you with your Garmin Smartwatch or fitness tracker in conjunction with the Huawei P20 Pro.

'Hi Graham,

You have previously been sen the Garmin Minimum Bluetooth requirements that clearly state that the Huawei phones have not passed our tests to be compatible with any of our devices.

This is something that Huawei have identified is an issue with their software.

Garmin has done as much as they can to update our devices and find workarounds to fix this issue but as advised in the link, you will experience drop outs which will require regular troubleshooting, and we can not confirm there will ever be a connection with Huawei phones and Garmin devices.

Kind regards,

Victoria

My husband and I have both recently upgraded to Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. We both have Garmin watches and are unable to receive smart notifications on our watches (Vivo active 3 and Forerunner 235) which is really frustrating. Does anyone know how we sort this? I had it temporarily on P20/Vivo active 3 but now have lost them totally and can't get it back. Thanks in advance.

Hi

I contacted Garmin direct and they sent me the following:

Swipe down from the top of the home screen
Tap the Settings cog icon
Tap Battery
Tap App Launch
Select individual or batch select apps, where auto, secondary and run-in-background settings can be disabled/enabled individually
Note: You will want to select Disable for Connect if you are selecting individual
If these steps have been completed and your are not receiving any smart notifications, you will need to complete the following steps:

Open the phone's Settings menu
Search for Special Access
Select the Special Access icon
Select "Access to Notifications"
Enable access to notifications for Connect

Hope it works for you as it worked for us.

Hi, Can I ask does the watch update your daily activity as well as your training session to your phone?
