Charging the Apple Pencil - How to do it

With the release of the new Apple Pencil and the associated compatibility issues between models, charging the Apple Pencil can become confusing depending on which model you own.

Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to charge the Apple Pencil if this does not work yet.

First of all, it is important that you know which Apple Pencil you are using (model).

  • The first generation of Apple Pencils is round and shiny, with a cap-up top.
  • The second generation has a more blocky design and offers a matt surface.

In addition, the new model does not have a cap on the top.

If you now know which Apple Pencil you are using, you can proceed:

How to charge the Apple Pencil - FIRST generation:

You have two options for the first generation:

Option 1: Recharge via iPad Pro

Simply insert the pin into the shaft provided for this purpose. This takes about 15 to 30 minutes until the pen is fully charged. However, the pen can already be used again after approx. 15 seconds.

Option 2: Lightning cable

This method requires the supplied adapter from Pencil socket to Lightning cable. When the adapter is connected, simply connect the Apple Pencil to the charger. Here too, the Apple Pencil should be charged within 15-30 minutes with an empty battery.

How to charge the Apple Pencil - SECOND generation:

With the second generation, Apple has further developed the Apple Pencil Design to make charging child's play. Similar to the Apple Watch, the new Apple Pencil loads wirelessly via QI.

To charge the second-generation Apple Pencil, simply attach it to the right edge of any 12.9-inch iPad Pro or 11-inch iPad Pro third-generation pencil.

At the top of the iPad Pro screen, a small overlay will appear informing you that the pencil is connected via QI. The status bar also shows the current charge status of the device.
